Colm O’Donnell, Head Instructor:
Colm is joining us from Ireland this summer but was born in Philadelphia and moved to Ireland when he was 4. He is currently finishing his second year studying Mathematical Science at the National University of Ireland in Galway. He started sailing when he was 12 in his hometown of Westport In the West of Ireland, and ever since then, it has become a passion of his. When he turned 15, he completed all the relevant learning courses for sailing in Ireland and decided to expand his love of sailing by taking the Instructor courses. He spent a couple of years helping out around his club until he became old enough to become an instructor, and has been teaching sailing for the past 4 years. Colm loves the sea and enjoys teaching up-and-coming sailors to help make them more competent on the water. He is very approachable and truly enjoys the job. He is look forward to meeting everyone and to having a memorable summer here at BYC.
Cam Tougas, Opti Race Coach:
Cam Tougas is a 23-year-old college graduate from the University of Rhode Island. Cam was born and raised in Marion his entire life and started sailing since day one. He went through the Beverly Yacht Club program, including spending many years on the Opti Race Team, and has been coaching ever since. His first years of instructing and coaching were right here at BYC, but Cam has been coaching all over ever since, including spending this last winter coaching in Europe. Cam had a successfully opti career, placing in many events across New England. He has coached many different types of boats, including opti’s, and he is excited to come back to his home program coaching the boat he started in6.
Nick Memoli, 420 Race Coach:
Nick Memoli grew up in Wayland, Massachusetts and graduated from Wayland High School in 2016. Currently, he is a rising junior and computer information systems major at Bentley University. He serves as the president of the sailing team and skippers in regattas nearly every weekend in the fall and spring. He has spent every summer growing up at the Beverly Yacht Club. From 2012-2015, he was a member of the 420 Race Team. In 2016, he worked as a senior instructor teaching 420-2 and assisting with the 420 race team. In 2017, he worked as the head 420 race coach. He fell in love with sailing when he began racing Bullseyes with his dad at six years old. A couple of things he enjoys most outside of sailing are playing the the cello and watching the Patriots. He looks forward to another incredible summer being on the water, coaching the 420 race team, and working with the promising next generation of sailors.
Patrick Fearons, Opti Green Race Coach:
Patrick lives in Mattapoisett, MA and is currently a senior at St. Georges School in Newport, RI where he has been on the sailing team for 3 years. He has sailed the majority of his life in dinghies, sailing Opti's for seven years, and was on the race team at BYC for three years. As well as being on the BYC race team, he was a part of the FAST program for three years traveling all over the US. He transitioned to the 420 and sailed them competitively. This upcoming summer will be his fourth summer working full time at the Beverly Yacht Club. He spent five weeks sailing around the Greek Isles on Geronimo,
a 70ft cutter, and next year will be attending Tulane University. His favorite thing about sailing is being competitive, while also having a great time out on the water. Patrick is looking forward to a great summer!
Sydney Hughes, Senior Instructor: Sydney started sailing when she was 7 years old right here at the BYC. This will be her third summer teaching at BYC, her second as a senior instructor. She is a junior at Wellesley High School in Wellesley, MA. Her favorite part of sailing is being on the water and learning how to master new boats. She is looking forward to meeting new people this summer and having fun on Sippican Harbor!
Owen Clark, Senior Instructor:
Owen grew up sailing across Buzzards Bay in the heavy winds of Wild Harbor starting at age nine. Following a handful of competitive years on the Southern Massachusetts race circuit, he served as one of the race coaches at Wild Harbor Yacht Club last summer. When the weather is cold, he attends Gettysburg College, where he has just completed his freshman year and is studying Political Science and Mathematics. He enjoys making music with friends in his free time. Owen is very excited to meet new people and share his passion for the sport of sailing this summer at BYC.
John Egger, Senior Instructor:
John is very excited to be a Senior Sailing Instructor for the first time this summer. He started sailing when he was three months old on his family's Bullseye. As he grew older, he began racing on a Shields with his dad, and when he was 8, he started sailing in the Junior Program at BYC. He enjoyed Opti sailing, and had a blast sailing for the Opti Race Team and on the 420 Race Team as well. He has just completed his Junior year at Bishop Stang High School, where he was a part of the varsity swim team, achieving second in place in conference and going on to sectionals and states. He is also part of the Stang varsity sailing team, which has won the Cape and Islands championships for the past two years. He is looking forward to meeting all of you and having a great summer on the water!
Jack Murray, Senior Instructor:
Jack lives with his family in Marion, MA, where he has attended Tabor Academy for the last four years. At Tabor, Jack has raced on the varsity sailing team in addition to running on the cross-country team, playing trumpet in the wind ensemble, and working as head carpenter for winter musicals. This fall, Jack will be attending Villanova University, where he will study computer engineering. Jack has been sailing at Beverly Yacht Club for many years with experience in both Opti’s and 420’s, including two years on the 420 Race Team and as a Junior Instructor. He is excited to share his love of sailing and looks forward to a great time on the water this summer.
Ava Ciffolillo, Senior Instructor:
Ava just graduated from Old Rochester Regional High School and will be attending Bucknell University this fall. She moved to Mattapoisett when she was nine years old, where she was first introduced to sailing. She spent many summers racing Sunfish at Angelica Point and participating in the MattSail program. She then joined the Beverly Yacht Club seven years ago and fell in love with sailing 420s. She loved the sailing program and was a member of the 420 Race Team for three years. She looks forward to teaching young BYC sailors all that she’s learned. This is her third summer working at the BYC and her first year working as a Senior Instructor. Outside of sailing, Ava plays varsity lacrosse, track, and soccer for Old Rochester and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Julia Pardo, Senior Instructor:
Julia Pardo recently graduated from Tabor Academy as part of the class of 2018. She is heading to Loyola University Maryland in the Fall. Julia learned to sail at the Tabor Academy Summer Program when she was eight and has been sailing ever since. Julia was on the JV sailing team at Tabor for her first three years of high school and the Varsity team her senior year. This will be her third summer teaching at Beverly Yacht Club and her first summer as a senior instructor. She is looking forward to having a great summer on the water and teaching and meeting her students.
Meghan Berg, Junior Instructor
: Meghan is just finishing up her sophomore year at Old Rochester Regional High School and is excited to be returning to BYC as a Junior Instructor this year. She spent the last 7 years progressing through various BYC classes, ending as a member of the 420 Race Team last year. Outside of sailing, Meghan is an avid hockey player, and she also enjoys playing field hockey and softball. She is looking forward to spending another summer out on Sippican Harbor, making many stops at Meadow Island, and especially can’t wait for the Pickles Wacky Race!
Kate Marsden, Junior Instructor:
Kate is 16 years old and is going to be a Junior at Old Rochester Regional High School. She is on the varsity field hockey, ice hockey, sail team, and is a part of the school's A cappella group. She’s also a member of the Drama Club, and her last role was Charlie in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. When she was young, she spent her summer sailing at BYC as a junior member, and is looking forward to teaching kids to sail safely, but most of all, to have fun!
Toni Ciffolillo, Junior Instructor:
Toni is 16 years old and goes to school at Old Rochester Regional High School. She will be entering her junior year in the fall. She plays volleyball and runs track, and has been sailing at BYC for 5 years. Toni loves to sail, and she enjoys attending regattas for fun and learning experiences. She also loves working with kids and meeting new people.
Seamus Fearons, Junior Instructor:
Seamus is currently a junior St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island. He is one of six siblings and love kids. He first started sailing when he was six at the Beverly Yacht Club and continued to sail and race Opti’s until he was 14. He also sailed for Team Fast in Newport, Rhode Island and traveled all over the country competitively sailing in his Opti. He has grown up on the water and can't wait to help out at the yacht club this summer!
Sophia Clingman, Junior Instructor:
Sophia Clingman is currently a junior attending Old Rochester Regional (ORR) High School in Mattapoisett, MA. She is the oldest of two siblings and is fond of working with children; she is very excited to meet all of the students this coming summer. Sophia has been sailing on the ORR Varsity Sailing Team for three years. She participates in various clubs at ORR, including two years in the Drama Club. She has been a member of the BYC 420 Race Team and 420 Green Race.
